What Is The Best Mulch For My Garden?

Every beginner in landscaping and gardening almost always asks the same question. What is the best mulch I can get? There are many different types of mulch to choose from. Each type is designed to suit a specific purpose and possesses specific properties. What you need to do before buying mulch and beginning to work on a project is to ask yourself first what it is you want to achiever in your garden in terms of aesthetics and productivity.

Here are some basic types of mulch you can choose from and the specific purposes of each for you to better determine what type of mulch you will be needing on your project:

  1. Rubber mulch
Rubber mulch is the most durable type of mulch and has a lifespan of at least 10 years before you see the need to replace it. This is due to the fact that rubber mulch is non-biodegradable. It is low-maintenance which is great to use for playgrounds. You will also be helping the environment since rubber mulch is made from recycled rubber tires. Rubber mulch is elastic which makes it the best type of mulch to use for playgrounds as it can effectively help soften the falls during accidents.
  2. Cocoa mulch
Cocoa mulch looks good but smells better. If you don’t have any pets at home and you want a biodegradable mulch, you can use cocoa mulch instead of the typical mulch used in gardening. Cocoa mulch grows darker with time, not grayer, and gives it a natural earth color tone that complements the overall look of any garden. Cocoa mulch gives off a sweet chocolate aroma that usually lasts for weeks.

Although the scent might not be as strong in time as it is first laid, you will still be able to smell its sweet scent if you get closer to the mulch. Be careful though when laying out the mulch because like real chocolates, cocoa can be poisonous to dogs who might try to eat it due to its good scent.

There is actually no best mulch you can brand these days. Mulch varies in purpose, in physical attributes, and its benefits. A good evaluation of your mulch needs and your personal taste can best determine which type of mulch is appropriate for any given project.
