Among the best types of mulch you could buy is the pine bark mulch. It has similar uses as the common types of mulch. These uses include water retention, weed growth reduction; prevention of soil erosion and ensuring soil enrichment. When this organic mulch decays, it offers adequate nutrients to the young plants and shrubs. This leads to better yields. This type of mulch is sold in different sizes. You can get nugget sized mulch or the finely shredded mulch.

One of the indicators of the quality pine mulch is its unique aroma plus the lovely dark brown color. You should not just go shopping for the next bag of nuggets. Think about the climatic conditions currently. Some of the mulch is made of very tiny and lightweight pine nuggets. This type of mulching will not be very beneficial to your garden soil in terms of adding nutritional value as time passes. Once rainstorms and snow season comes, those tiny nuggets have the ability to float. Before you know it they are all gone leaving your land improperly covered.

Go for the type of pine bark mulch with larger nuggets if your locality is prone to harsh weather conditions. Perhaps your main focus is to buy pine mulch to restore the soil fertility. The best type of mulch to pick for the purpose of boosting soil fertility is very fine. The finer nuggets can easily decay to nourish the soil. The biggest problem with it is frequent application. According to the gardening experts, the best time to reapply the mulch is during spring season. This does not mean you should ignore your garden during the other seasons though. You should always learn to keep your garden healthy and attractive by mulching. Mulching using pine bark is not at all a complicated procedure. In fact you should plant and apply the mulch simultaneously. Assuming you know the planting directions, use a trowel to dig holes into the old mulch. You should dig different sized holes depending upon the task you want to complete.

Take caution when handling the pine bark as it can irritate your skin. Pull the old mulch back as you plant the transplants or seeds. Cover the seeds or plants in the holes with fresh soil and add some fertilizer according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Those seeds or plants will take sometime to germinate or grow taller. During this time period you should not apply the old or the new pine mulch. Once the plants are taller than the level of the mulch, its time to cover them.

Surround each plant with mulch and leave a small space around it. This space makes watering the plants easy and quick. To prevent weed growth you need to add spanking new mulch three inches deep. Go ahead and clear other areas you would like to cover with the pine bark mulch. These areas could be around trees’ roots, flowers and so on. If you are applying the mulch during the cold seasons, make sure the roots of the plants are protected from drying once they freeze.
